On The Greaux – The building boom continues in Lafayette

New Condos Near UL

From the ashes of a house fire, more student-focused housing is heading to near the UL campus in Lafayette. Building records show Roosevelt Street Condominiums has been permitted to build a $400,000 complex at the corner of Roosevelt and Gen. Mouton – that’s just about two blocks from the edge of the UL campus.

The condos are being built on a lot that used to house an older house that caught on fire about a year ago, and has since been demolished. The sign at the property looks almost exactly the same as the sign that was at the property where condos have recently been built on Johnston Street, across from Ground Pat’i. I’m not sure if the developers are the same – or they’re just using the same design. Over on Johnston Street – those condos were two bedrooms, two stories and they were listed for around $140,000 a piece.

Again, another disrespectful use of a corner lot in an urban neighborhood. The realized building has no base other than a concrete slab, with a roof out of proportion to the size of the building, fronting the intersection with a parking lot. Better could have been done, and it is a loss for the neighborhood as it is already replete with mediocre designs such as this, just as the car dealership was clearing out opening up the possibilities of the LINC neighborhood designs to begin to pull the neighborhood together through a cohesive rebuilding model as new developments were to occur.
